Happy New Year! My goal for twenty-ten is to blog more on blogger and post more to my side project The Daily Penguin. It's been slow so far but, ready? here I go!

Eric and I took an awesome holiday vacation to the wonderful West Coast. Here's your Long, Overdue Recap.

Saturday, December 19th. 7AM EST. Winter was coming our way and nothing, NOTHING was going to stand in its way. I received an email from Jet Blue with the subject line "Cancellation to your flight." Wait, I can reschedule my flight to Vegas free of charge and leave tomorrow instead? Really? No, thanks! Not when our Vegas (UCSB Reunion) Extravaganza was planned for one night. Thanks to some quick flight searching and top notch service, Jet Blue was back on my A list when they booked us for a flight (routed via Boston) arriving in Vegas just one hour after our original flight would have landed. Success!

Saturday, December 19th. 11PM PST. We had an excellent flight to Las Vegas, NV and walked off the plane ready for some In-n-Out deliciousness. Luckily, our friendly taxi driver didn't mind the detour so we stopped at the drive-thru on the way to the Excalibur. The night immediately jumped over the 10-point mark after that cheeseburger (double-double for Eric) and than it was dancing time at the Luxor club LAX with the group!

Sunday, December 20th. 2 PM PST. The reunion closed with a quiet, somber brunch at MORE buffet at the Luxor. The late night party was the perfect mix of wild, crazy fun and just a touch away from overwhelming. Which was good considering (disclosure) this was Eric's first trip to Vegas! At 2:00 pm we rented a car and started heading West to California. Next stop: Santa Barbara!

Sunday, December 20th. 8 PM PST. Dinner with my Camino friends at Harry's Restaurant. Good times. Good food. And then...bedtime! We had reached the breaking point and thankfully got some much needed rest.

Monday, December 21st. We awoke to a breezy, overcast, gray morning in Santa Barbara but our spirits were soaring. We raced over to Super Cuca's for breakfast burritos. Feeling a bit nostalgic after the mini reunion in Vegas, I wanted to show Eric what the best university in the world looks like. Luckily, he was able the walk around campus with an official UCSB tour guide (Me!). Campus Point was teeming with talented surfers and we spent the morning enjoying the beautiful scenery and awesome waves.

We drove south and took a quick tour of the Mission, stopped for a quick visit to my old office in Carpinteria, and watched the sunset at The Beach Grill at Padaro. Camino friends joined us for an exciting dinner at Something's Fishy for our last night in SB. Yea for sushi, hibachi and sake bombs. When I say sake, you say bomb. SAKE BOMB!

Tuesday, December 22nd. We departed sunny Santa Barbara on route to San Jose. The lovely scenic drive north along side the Pacific was gorgeous. The 101 is my favorite freeway and I often find myself thinking about the stretches of highway which I consider some of my favorite scenic vistas of California. We arrived in SJ around 2 PST ready for family time/Holiday festivities.

Wednesday, December 23rd. My Mom, Eric and I traveled to San Francisco to visit the Academy of Sciences. More than just a museum, it includes a planetarium, aquarium, natural history museum, and a four story rainforest - where you can visit Borneo, Madagascar, Costa Rica and the Amazon. Of course, the highlight of the Academy was watching the penguins!

Every aspect of the building itself was designed with the environment in mind. The living roof, consisting of 7 small hills, reflects the landscape of San Francisco. The skylights allow natural light above the rainforest and aquarium and were created to open and close automatically for temperature regulation. The Academy has been named the greenest museum in the world and upholds a strong commitment to energy efficiency, reducing the carbon footprint, and preserving the natural world.

Saturday, December 26th. Eric and I had another adventure in San Francisco. This time we took the scenic Highway 1 via Devil's Pass.

Once in SF, we visited the Mission Dolores and took a walking tour with my uncle around the Mission District.

Sunday, December 27th. After celebrating my cousin's birthday, it was time to pack up and say goodbye to everyone. We were flying out of San Jose back to New York on a late night redeye. It was a memorable adventure and I loved every second of the trip. Adios.

Walking tour of Boston

My Mom and I recently spent two beautiful whirlwind days in Boston. This was her first time visiting the New England capital. We stayed at The Harborside Inn on State Street conveniently located next to the Aquarium T stop and steps away from Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. We walked the Freedom Trail, which is a wonderful trek through Boston's streets, museums, and significant sites honoring the history of America’s Revolution. We saw the cyclists participating in the Mayor’s Cup Bike Race and we visited the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. It was a great vacation.

The Legendary Michael Jackson

This week we watched an emotional Memorial Service for Michael Jackson. He passed away on June 25th, 2009.

During his service Queen Latifah recited a poem written by Maya Angelou in tribute called "We Had Him".

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing,
now that our bright and shining star can slip away
from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.
Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace.
Sing our songs among the stars
and walk our dances across the face of the moon.
In the instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing.

Total Eclipse of the Heart

There is something about the song Total Eclipse of the Heart that gives me such a good feeling. Maybe it's my love for classic 80's songs. Or, perhaps it's the fun memories of dancing to the Nikki French version back in H.S. But, every time I listen to Total Eclipse of the Heart I feel like everything is right in the world.

This week, that all changed.

Somehow, after all these years I had never seen the original music video. It's a crazy video. Like funny/weird/drug crazy. And, the latest online video craze hitting the social media avenues is the Literal Video Version of Total Eclipse of the Heart. Good luck.

A. Amazingly. Yes.

Just when I thought I had seen it all and it couldn't get weirder, it was just half way over. Around 3:28, it really started to freak me out. Seriously, I get chills just thinking about those eyes! Is that what happens when you stare into an eclipse? You know you can see an eclipse by looking into a pot of water and seeing the reflection of the sun/moon convergence. It's a whole lot better than having your eyes burned by a solar laser.

After reading two awesome reviews about Sugar, Eric and I were convinced that we needed to watch it this weekend. We were especially excited when we learned that the writer-directors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were going to be at the 7pm show for a Q&A. I love the Angelika!

The film is about a young Dominican pitcher working to get off the island and play baseball in the U.S. It's a beautiful portrayal of the Dominican Republic, a close-knit Dominican family and the pressure of making it in baseball.

I loved the soundtrack and tried to research it yesterday when I got home. I'm so disappointed that I didn't ask about the release yesterday at the showing. I can't find any information about the soundtrack online. If anyone knows when it will be released, please comment.

It's been quite the hiatus, but I'm back. My travels in February + March consisted of a quick trip to Miami, FL for the Miami Boat Show, a week long escapade in South America, a chilly afternoon in Cold Spring, NY and a gorgeous weekend in Clearwater, FL.

Hall of Fame 2009

Congratulations to Rickey Henderson! Today he was elected to join the Hall of Fame with 94.8% of votes. I was a huge A's fan while growing up in San Jose, CA and loved watching Rickey steal bases at the Coliseum. During my recent trip to Cooperstown I began the countdown for Rickey's induction. I'm so happy he will be honored for his many achievements and records this year.

The Hall of Fame is one of the coolest places to visit. Check out my intense photo tour here. The HOF is right up there with Muir Woods in California, the Accademia in Florence, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

If you love baseball, you need to visit the epicenter in Cooperstown, NY.

Book Review

Many years ago Patrick Henry spoke his infamous words “Give me liberty or give me death”. Naomi Wolf recently wrote a book based on his principle called Give me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries. It discusses the history of democracy in this country, how our government was created, and ways Americans can fight for their rights.

Wolf argues that Americans have become complacent with regard to the state of today’s democracy. She explains that some forms of free speech now requires a special permit process. Strict ordinances discourage free speech with high insurance fees and noise restrictions. And, the use of tasers make speaking out physically dangerous.

Her recommendations include putting more of an emphasis on civics education in school, making voting mandatory and creating a guide to running for local, state and national office. Government should be more accessible to all people. It should be more transparent and comprehensible to all citizens.

This is a handbook for Americans that want to learn how to help those in need, to protest or hold a boycott, to run a town meeting, to get their message heard by those in power, and how to run for office.

But it’s much more than that. It explains how the government became what it is today. It explains who the framers were and what they intended by writing the constitution. And, how the events that followed resulted in commercial imperialism. In just over one hundred years we’ve been responsible for overthrowing fourteen governments for various ideological, political, and economic reasons, such as Nicaragua, Honduras, Cuba, Iran, Guatemala, the Philippines, etc.

This handbook also cites several current key activists working to make a difference. They’ve started non-profits, political web sites, and campaigned for presidential candidates. Her portraits show how ordinary Americans have been motivated to make a difference. The last section of the book clearly explains the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and amendments.

Wolf challenges us to be more conscious of our government, to continue our commitment to freedom, and to be better Americans.

He appeared on The Colbert Report last week to discuss the book. Stephen Colbert, never missing an opportunity to show off his Emmy tried to stab him with it...just kidding. Check out the video clip: it will either make you want to read Phelps' book, or dunk him underwater.

During the last couple of weeks I've seen so many subway readers reading Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama. This is clearly the most popular book being read right now. Personally, I enjoyed reading The Audacity of Hope a bit more but perhaps it was because I was much more interested in his current philosophy of politics and world issues as opposed to his thoughts during childhood.

Both books are very good reads and it's super cool that Barack Obama narrates both audio versions. You can download these books on audible.com. Currently Audible is offering a trial membership. Learn about it at audible.com/subway.

During my walk from the subway, I noticed a sign that said "Coup de Coeur". From my travels I knew that Coeur meant heart in French. Coup literally means blow - but in this reference it means something special that strikes your heart. If you have a passion for shopping you may consider a tour with Amanda and Lucia. It's a brand new day for female athletes and a new era in baseball. Eri Yoshida, 16, has been drafted to play for a pro baseball team in Japan. She is the first woman in Japan to join a men's professional baseball team. Yoshida will pitch for the Kobe 9 Cruise, she throws a side-arm knuckleball.

Last night we saw Boz Scaggs at Blue Note. It was an amazing performance. Here is my favorite song called Harbor Lights.

Blue Note is an awesome venue and always has a great lineup. If you enjoy music, you should definitely check it out.

Anyone who knows me well would say that I'm an advertising nut. Whether it's a beautiful print ad, savvy web banner, intense movie trailer, or exciting commercial - I'm all over it. Rachel brought this commercial to my attention and it's so clever, I love it.

Reading on the train

I've been officially book-less this week. A few weeks ago Eric bought me The Silmarillion. An awesome book I've read before and was really interested in reading again. It was a lovely gift he bought me from THE STRAND the best bookstore in all of NY.

Anyway, I started the book and I just had to put it down. As they say, life is too short - why finish reading something you don't want to read. Every time I'd read a few pages on the train I would somehow get distracted - and would literally force myself to pick it up again. It was quite annoying, so I gave up.

This weekend I'm going to purchase a book written by one of my co-workers called The Cure For Anything Is Salt Water. The title of the book comes from the beautiful quote from Isak Dinesen, aka Karen Blixen (Think, Out of Africa) who says, "The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea".

I have read enough about the book that I'm confident I'll be able to read it on the subway...or maybe I'll even finish it this weekend.

On my subway ride home I noticed a women with a beautiful red handbag reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Now, while this is a great book - you don't usually see too many people reading it on the subway. I mean really - it was published in '98 (didn't everyone read that 10 years ago!). But it got me thinking, what I would give to have been on the subway the morning of July 21, 07. The day Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was finally in bookstores - and started disappearing from the shelves. I bet everyone had that book in their hands!

Next on the agenda is a movie at The Pavilion Theater and jazz at Blue Note. Cheers!

Obama's Victory

Last night, I watched the election coverage with friends in the lower east side of NYC. We anxiously waited for the results of our two-year presidential race. The final votes were cast, polls closed across the nation and we started celebrating as state after state on the map of America turned blue. Last night the city was overjoyed with excitement and everyone was smiling! After weeks of feeling nervous for my country, worried about our future and concerned about how this election would turn out, I feel a sense of relief and hope.

My favorite boats

This week I attended the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show. It was such a nice change to feel the hot Florida sun and enjoy 70 degree weather again. While walking around the convention center I discovered my favorite fishing boats.

Rays Win! Rays Win!

Last night, Eric and I enjoyed a historic moment. Even our little pup Masha was jumping for joy as the Rays team shared an epic group hug in St Pete.

Have you seen the headlines? "go cRAYSy!" and "Rays the Roof!" It's true, our Rays have won the American League Championship Series and are headed to the World Series!

MVP Matt Garza puts it best: "People were happy when we got our 71st win, people were excited when we got our 81st win. People kept saying, 'You guys are going to falter in August and September. You guys are going to falter when you face Chicago [in the ALDS]. You guys don't match up well against Boston.' We just kept telling each other, 'Keep fighting, keep believing.'"

In the 8th inning, Rookie David Price gave the term closer a whole new meaning. He literally slammed the door on the Red Sox.

Next read this great ESPN article. My favorite part: "The Rays are not just another plucky little underdog team that sneaked into the World Series, friends. They're an official sporting miracle."

It's a cold, cold morning. Current temperature: 45°F - Feels Like 39°F. Walking Masha earlier there was a bitter chill in the wind. We didn't walk through the park across the street as usual. Just up and down the block since steaming coffee and a warm bed was awaiting our return.

The leaves are starting to change. What a beautiful view.

"Krafty recorded this song at Houndslake and Westdale studios a few days before I moved to New York. The rhythm and beautifully deep bass tone came from a circa-1970s Wurlitzer Funmaker that belongs to Brett Walsh; you play the bass pedals with your foot. The rhythm was on the "Latin" setting; however, I took the downbeat to be halfway through the pattern, effectively turning the beat upside down. I was going for a sort of snowy, Siberian sniper vibe: but the choruses seem to have come out as pure 3 a.m. Mandalay Avenue, Clearwater, Gulf of Mexico undertow regardless.

This is just one song from a series of sessions in which we recorded the bulk of a new LP, tentatively titled "The Sugar Oaks Forfeit". If that strikes you as odd, then you probably don't know us personally."

Found out my neighbor Derek plays in a band called Aquavibe. Check out their music, they have a super cool Hip Hop sound. They are playing tonight in Staten Island. I have to miss it due to the Tampa Bay Rays game. Have to stay in and cheer for my guys: Longoria, Upton, Crawford, and Peña. I feel a win brewing tonight for my Rays in Florida tonight!

Battle in Seattle - In Theaters Now

Last night, we watched Battle in Seattle at the Angelika Theater. After the film, there was a Q&A session with director Stuart Townsend and stars Charlize Theron and Martin Henderson.

I first heard about Battle in Seattle while reading an email from The Sierra Club. They are sponsoring a free viewing on Thursday with United Steelworkers and NY Citizens Trade Coalition. Then I saw an interview with Charlize Theron on The Daily Show. Check it out here. After learning about the Q&A session, I immediately purchased tickets.

I was interested to see this movie to learn more about the WTO conference in Seattle. At UCSB I worked as a news director for KCSB, the campus radio station. I remember talking to students about their experience protesting the WTO in 1999. [Check out this interesting article from the Nexus archives written one year after the demonstrations.] However, some time has gone by since then and I was hopeful that this movie would discuss the different sides involved. I also wanted to support Stuart Townsend's movie and hear about Townsend, Theron, and Henderson's experiences while making this film.

Townsend explained that originally he was interested in environmentalism. Then he read the book Take it Personally By Anita Roddick which helped him realize that the environment is so connected to politics, and connected to globalization. He feels this movie is about story-telling that really means something. That people can make a difference. He has spent the last 6 months creating the website because he knew people would ask themselves What Can I Do? when they left the theater. They have partnered with action groups for virgin forests, wild oceans, safe food, fair trade, and clean energy. You can find informational sections regarding these issues on the website.

The film is not scheduled for a wide release. It is currently playing in SF, DC, NY, San Rafael, Minneapolis, and Seattle. Next Wednesday it will start playing in Sacramento, and next Friday in LA, Berkeley, San Jose, Columbus, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, and Pittsburgh. On October it will open in select cities in CA, CO, NC, OH, OR, PA, PN, TX, WI, WA, WN. Click here for the complete list of theaters.

I strongly recommend that you watch this movie if it is playing near where you live. If you do not, request that it come to your city. Rent it when it is released on DVD. If you are a teacher share it with your classroom. And, make sure to visit the site to learn more.

This is a movie based on the events that took place on the streets of Seattle during the WTO Ministerial Conference. It is not a documentary but a story told through fictional characters. Battle in Seattle is a passionate, dramatic, informative movie about empowerment. I hope Americans will be receptive to this film and its message - People before Profits.

Trip to Newport

I spent the last few days attending the Newport Boat Show. It was my first time visiting this charming town and I loved it. The boat show was a success for our group and everyone near Rhode Island should check it out this weekend. We have officially started the exciting and exhausting boat show season. Up and down the coast, towns are showing off their marinas, boat folks are networking and shopping, and the mega yachts are in the spotlight.

This gorgeous painting really made an impression on me. It's in the window at Reign Gallery located on Thames St. The painting shows a ballroom with a beautiful view of the sea through a wall lined with windows. The position of the bright sun and the shadow from nearby buildings make it hard to really view it well but believe me when I stay it was stunning.

I'm back! Eric and I successfully moved in NY, I'm feeling settled and finally have a chance to update my gypsy blog. The last couple of weeks I've been following both political conventions, the VP candidates, speeches, reactions and all of the hype. It's been an interesting time for the media. If you take a step back and look past all that, I feel that it's important to remember what this election is all about. This video shows people that have been inspired by Obama's campaign sharing about their hope for change.

Red Bull Flugtag 2008

Today is Tampa's Red Bull Flugtag competition. About 36 local teams will jump off a 30-foot-high ramp with their homemade planes and try to fly. One of the teams competing is Orlando's The Wrong Brothers consisting of Jason, Mark, An, Keegan and Jan.

Red Bull began Flugtag (German for "flying day") in 1991. The record for the farthest flight — 195 feet — was set in Austria in 2000. The U.S. record, set last year in Nashville, is 155 feet.

The teams are judged on creativity, showmanship (each team will perform a skit before flying off the ramp), and distance. The first-place team will receive a pilot's training course, the second-place team will get skydiving lessons and third place will learn to paraglide. All teams will receive a trophy.

New York, next month

While Eric's been busy recording with The Sugar Oaks, I've been busy with plans for the big move to the big apple. We're driving up to New York in a couple of weeks. He'll be attending the New School and I'll be working as an Online Sales Manager. It's an exciting move and I'm so glad I was able to transfer to the NYC office of my company. What a great transition!

Pretty soon, I'll be riding the subway, towered by skyscrapers and playing in the snow!

Masha, the little pup, is so excited about exploring Prospect Park and the lovely streets of Park Slope.

There's quite a bit to do during the next couple of weeks. But, let's just say, I'm an expert in moving up and down and across the country, so packing's a snap.

What I'm focusing on is living up every last second of my FL adventure! Here's the agenda:
-Fishing and beach day in Clearwater
-West Palm Beach
-Rays vs. A's in Tampa
-Magic Kingdom at Disney World, Orlando

Lakers vs Celtics

Having lived in Southern California for 8 years, I am staying true to my Los Angeles Lakers this post-season. It's been exciting watching them play the Boston Celtics and I hope to see them play three more games.

I recently heard about Leon Powe's amazing inspirational story. He had a tough childhood in Oakland, CA. Powe had so little growing up and yet through the love of his family, positive role models, and strong determination his life is such a success. Plus, he is dedicated to giving back to the community. What a wonderful guy.

The quote above is from one of my favorite authors Oscar Wilde. As much as this weekend has been spent partying, resting, loving, and being productive it's also been a reading weekend. Sounds wonderful, right?

Yesterday, I finished Sister Teresa by Barbara Mujica an epic historical novel about the the woman who became Saint Teresa. Today I started reading The Mapmaker's Wife by Robert Whitaker, a delightful account of a women's journey through the Amazon. The journey itself probably won't be summed up as delightful, but I haven't gotten that far in the novel yet. Currently, we're reviewing the fascinating advances in map making that started in the 1400s.

One of the figures Whitaker mentions is Voltaire. I began thinking about the notable men and women that were exiled and continued to dedicate their lives to their passions. Here's a short list of several that I'm proud to mention.

Huckabee's not so funny joke

Last night, while Mike Huckabee was speaking at the National Rifle Association convention he was distracted by a loud noise backstage. The interruption prompted him to say, "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he -- he dove for the floor."

This type of humor clearly shows why so many democrats don't share the same values of NRA members. It's interesting to hear politicians that support the NRA explain that their efforts are for outdoorsmen. And then to hear Huckabee's quip! It isn't hunter's rights that are in danger - it's peoples lives. The reason why democrats fight against the NRA is because murder is so prevalent in our society. We should be concerned that the first thing Huckabee thinks about when he hears a noise is assassination. That isn't funny and it's not the kind of joke that should be told at a NRA convention.

He has since apologized, stating that the remark "was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama." My advice to Huckabee is stay focused in the future. Little jokes can cause big problems during elections.

Just a few notes before I run off to sample tequila downtown. Today we commemorate the Mexican army's success at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. The French had arrived in Mexico 5 months earlier to rule the Mexican empire. Although the Mexican army were significantly outnumbered they managed to defeat the French. And today we celebrate freedom and liberty.

One of favorite things to do besides watching movies is researching upcoming movies. Didn't realize I loved movies so much? Here are some fun facts about this obsession:

*I have an extensive collection of movie tickets - starting in '91
*I saw each Lord of the Rings, in the theater, 6+ times
*Watching midnight screenings is my secret passion
*I worked at the Camino Real Cinemas in Santa Barbara for the better part of 5 years

Eric and I are planning a quick getaway to NYC this week. Some items on the agenda are seeing friends, visiting New School, touring The Cloisters, and watching The Bands Visit. Today is the day we celebrate environmentalism. The first Earth Day was held in 1970 and we've come a long way since then!

I was so pleased to hear WMFE, Orlando's NPR affiliate station, announcing a special Earth Day promotion this morning. They have partnered with American Forests to plant trees in Hal Scott Preserve and Park when listeners contribute to the station. Learn more by clicking here.

She was one of the students that I studied abroad with in Bologna, Italy during college. And, I had the opportunity to get to know her while traveling through Italy. I'm so proud of Sara.

It was a stormy weekend. Lightning bolts flashed in the sky, the thunder echoed outside and I spent the weekend running from raindrops.

Gavin Rossdale performed at the Hard Rock last Thursday. It was most definitely the highlight of last week. Check out some pics posted by Orlando Metromix here. The free show was a benefit concert for Musicians for Life. However, I've never heard of a benefit concert being free and I can't find any information on this organization. I'm not complaining...just a bit confused feeling like I have a lack of info for this blog post. Gavin - please tell me what "Musicians for Life" is! ;)

Eric and I took Masha on a lovely walk today to the beautiful lakes on the other side of Leu Botanical Gardens. On the way back we saw a Pileated Woodpecker drilling into a pole on the side of the road. It looked just like this.

Speaking of drilling, the highlight of our weekend was putting up a Nicaraguan hammock in Eric's backyard. It took some trial and error, but finally we attached a couple of hooks to the Orange and Oak trees at the perfect height. This hamaca was a generous gift from my grandmother in San Jose. She bought it during her last trip to Nicaragua and it is a beautiful addition to the backyard. What a pleasure it was to read in the hammock, swaying in the evening breeze as Eric played guitar.

Tisana Delight

I recently came across a delicious recipe from Latina for Tisana (Sangria de Venezuela). Salud!

INGREDIENTS
1 bottle dry white sparking wine, such as cava
4 cups passion fruit juice
1 cup club soda
1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar
1 small orange, sliced
1 small lemon, sliced
1 star fruit, sliced

PREPARATION
In punch bowl or pitcher, combine wine, juice, soda and sugar. Add orange and lemon slices. Allow to steep in refrigerator for at least an hour. Serve over ice and garnish glasses with star fruit slices. Makes 10 servings.

Check out Akeelah and the Bee if you haven't already. If you've been looking for a family movie that doesn't make you cringe. This is the perfect movie. It's inspiring, emotional and sweet.

So what's next for Laurence Fishburne? He is co-directing the film The Alchemist set to come out in 2009. He also wrote the screenplay and is producing this film based on the Paulo Coelho novel. I can't wait to see this intense treasure-hunting story. Hopefully a trailer will be ready soon...fingers crossed!

I was never a fan of the Starbucks wifi plan with T-Mobile. I'm paying for the coffee, I'm paying for the phone service and I'm paying for the wifi use... What kind of partnership is this??? On Monday Starbucks announced that they are switching to AT&T this Spring. To sweeten the deal, the wifi connection fee w/o an AT&T Internet plan is cheaper than it was with T-Mobile phone service and free with an AT&T account.

According to the NY Times: "Nearly all of AT&T's broadband Internet customers, about 12 million, will automatically have unlimited free Wi-Fi access at Starbucks, the companies said." Read More...

This perk will extend to AT&T wireless phone customers in the future as well. Too cool!

While I was celebrating the holidays in California, I heard a news report about Benazir Bhutto's assassination. I consider myself an expert on the dissemination of news. Therefore, I know to avoid FOX, watch CNN but trust BBC International. It's really not as simple as that, of course. Perhaps when you are curious about the weather. Not when you are examining the history of a country as complex and chaotic as Pakistan.

I came home to Orlando and immediately visited the Winter Park library to check out Benazir Bhutto's autobiography: Daughter of Destiny. I was confident that this book would give me a descriptive account of her experiences in Pakistan during the Zia dictatorship up into the time that she came into power.

I was not surprised by her accusatory tone towards the US and the Regan administration. Last year I read The Guerrilla Wars of Central America: Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. Definitely a year by year account of United States sponsored massacres and destruction via political, military and financial intervention. (related wiki article here).

Sorry, back from the tangent. I was inspired to write this blog after reading this recent Creative Loafing article. Which lead me to read this article on Slate. Both focus more on her bravery and determination to put the country back in the hands of the people rather than her families' alleged financial corruption. As it should be.

Daughter of Destiny painfully describes the period after Zia's coup during the unjust trial of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He is imprisoned for 2 years then hung. For eleven years Benazir suffers imprisonment and exile between intermittent public campaigning while Pakistan is subject to martial law. Nevertheless, the grim details of the Zia dictatorship, the endless human rights violations, and the memory of the father she lost rouse Bhutto to restore democracy.

It is important to address that Pakistan is currently in a state of martial law. Amid the debates surrounding nuclear arms, ties with Afghanistan, the Bhutto investigations, the focus must be redirected to Pakistan's people.

We must refocus our energy on promoting the values of democracy, accountability, broad-based government, and institutions that can respond to people's very real and very urgent needs." - Benazir Bhutto

Happy New Year. This month is flying by faster than a speeding train (a European train not the turtle US trains over here).

In other music news, I just listened to Pharoahe Monch's latest CD Desire. It's super. I saw him in 2005 opening for Mos Def and Talib Kweli with Clea at HOB in Anaheim at The Breed Love Odyssey Tour. That show had too many hightlights to list. You'll just have to believe me when I say it was life-changing. Anyway, check out the new CD. Which song to hear first? I am thankful for a lot of wonderful things this year
My loving family, my amazing boyfriend Eric, my supportive friends, my lovely home in Orlando, my exciting job, and frequent flyer miles. This is the second year in a row that I'm flying home for Thanksgiving on miles. Considering how expensive flights are during Thanksgiving and the fact that my family has the best Thanksgiving meal in the world this is a good thing.

Eric posted the demo, artwork, and lyrics on his band's myspace (myspace.com/thesugaroaks) of a new tune called Near Easter. Check it out on myspace, and we encourage you to download it. Hopefully it can soundtrack something great for you.

Some trivia:
- Our good man and frequent collaborator Brett Walsh played the accordion.
- Jon Kraft recorded it.
- The song was supposed to be used in the end credits of an independent film called Feast of Flowers, starring Eric as a young William Bartram type during WWII, and set amongst local orange groves, the Kennedy Space Center, and the Econlockhatchee River.
- The film was aborted during the editing process.
- The song is written in "Raise E" tuning. Instead of dropping the E string to a D, you raise the D string to an E.

I've actually been doing some traveling! I recently spent some time in Islamorada and St. Augustine. Plus, in 9 days Eric and I will be heading to California!!!

Islamorada was a lot of fun. The water was awesome and it was great bonding with my colleagues from work. The highlight was definitely snorkeling! There are some beautiful fish in the Keys!

During labor day weekend Eric and I spent a couple of days in St. Augustine. Highlights were cooling off at The Milltop Tavern, getting drenched in the craziest weather ever (this could also fall into the "things we should have avoided" category - depending on your frame of mind), eating at the fabulous Columbia Restaurant and enjoying our balcony with wine and a Nicaraguan cigar. Wow, what a weekend!

In baseball news, this week each team announced their nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. I was super impressed after reading the article on Nick Swisher-the A's candidate for the award. He's an excellent role model, donates his time and energy to women with cancer, tirelessly works with charities and even started his own called "Swish's Wishes".

Roberto Clemente was an extraordinary athlete and humanitarian. In December of 1972, Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, suffered two powerful earthquakes that leveled the city. Clemente decided to fly to Nicaragua shortly after the disaster to aid the earthquake survivors. Tragically, he perished on the way to Nicaragua. His plane crashed into the ocean on December 31st.

The Roberto Clemente Award was originally known as The Commissioner's Award but was renamed in 1973 in Clemente's honor. This is the first year that baseball fans will vote on the recipient of the award. You can vote here until Oct. 5th.

In my absence, I've replaced my old computer, visited Cooperstown, caught a bass in upstate NY, and renewed my love for writing.

My mom, Eric, and I saw Stardust last night. It pretty much had everything you could possibly need in a movie: witches, princesses, magic, pirates, a sexy love triangle, flying, murder, secret kingdoms, princes rivaling for the throne, falling stars, unicorns, families reunited, and beautiful young love. What are you waiting for? Take your beautiful wench/hot captain to see this tonight!

Tomorrow I leave for sunny Islamorada. I've never been so far south. It's going to be a long drive and I'm missing the coolest party this month. But, at least I'll be traveling for work again. I've been wanting this since March.

Barry Bonds is the best player in Baseball right now. So, why are there so many people against him? I have no idea! This post is dedicated to #25. Read on to see articles that actually focus on his achievements in the sport rather than the negativity surrounding him in the media. I'm not saying that we should ignore drug tests or disregard the rules placed on athletes. However, do not ask whether someone who has been an exceptional ball player for 20+ years deserves some recognition. Any way you look at it, it's a historic home run.

Hank Aaron's bio in the Baseball Almanac discusses the reaction when Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record. "Sadly, the color of his skin deemed Aaron undeserving of Ruth's hallowed record to many, who showered him and his family with insults at games and death threats through the mail." I have included this quote to point out that this isn't the first time criticism has afflicted a record breaking ball player.

Hank Aaron completed the 1976 season with 755 home runs. What's been going on these last 30 years? If Barry Bonds did use steroids how can you relate that to beating a record? Have only a handful of athletes "enhanced" their performance? Or, is this a widespread problem that has taken place in locker rooms for years? The current strict agreement began to affect Major League baseball just 2 years ago. This is a brand new hot item to discuss and the media is just running to town with it. Perhaps the rules of sterioid testing should have been changed 10 years ago. Maybe we'd be reading some very different baseball news. But that said, this is the world we live in. I have been cheering for Barry Bonds since '93 and can't wait for him to break the record and run those bases!

one year anniversary

On 7/25/06 I moved to Orlando, FL. I've officially been a Floridian for one year. Don't ask me how I've acclimated to the heat, because I honesty haven't. I'm actually surprised at how hot and humid Orlando can get each afternoon. Which is ridiculous by now, I know!

It's been a crazy hectic week. Luckily, I had a wonderful, relaxing, love-filled weekend.

Today I got some movie screening tickets from Park Ave CDs (The one on Virginia, of course) It's for Rescue Dawn with Steve Zahn and Christian Bale. Check out the trailer, it's intense. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully we'll get to the theater in time to get in. I haven't been to a screening in so long so I really have my fingers crossed.

Today I received an email from Ted with the following link: Potter. I promptly replied, "I can't read that!!!!" after skimming the first couple paragraphs. Last part I read said-"Look away." I did! I just couldn't read it! The final Harry Potter book will be out in a few days and I don't want to see any spoilers-whether or not they are true. (Supposedly, this article has actual 100% accurate spoilers).

On Saturday we saw Lucía y el sexo (Sex and Lucia). It was super interesting, imaginative, sexy, and sweet/disturbing. The line that probably struck me the most was when Lorenzo says "What was the point of being a father if she didn't know?" He was talking about his daughter Luna after he's informed of her birth. He basically visits her and gets to know her while keeping his identity a secret. I suppose there is no reason to call yourself a father if you don't act like one to your child. I think Lorenzo deep down wants Luna to know that he's her father. The truth is though, it's much easier to live your life without acknowledging a child than to grow up without a parent. It's not two sides of the same coin. It's not like seeing lightning but not hearing the thunder. It's like living in darkness on the sun.

Harry Potter book countdown is at 11 days! Recent CNN.com article According to J.K. Rowling, there are a few deaths in book 7. Personally, I don't think Harry Potter is one of them. Not because I'm trying to be positive but because I am confident that Harry is going to have the opportunity to avenge the deaths of his parents, Cedric, Sirius, and Dumbledore in this next book. Would Rowling allow Harry to become as powerful as he has become, to know as much as he has learned, and then get defeated by Voldemort? That just doesn't make sense. Well, I guess we'll just have to wait + or - 2 weeks to find out...

I saw a great image today of the Evolution of Apple's Products. Check it out! Whoa, right? How many of you played The Oregon Trail or Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego on one of those early Macs of the 90's?

I hung out with some swimming penguins yesterday. All is well at the Sea World exhibit. As well as the friendly Hospitality Center :) Cheers!

What's better than a four-day work week? A four-day work week with a break in the middle!

Today I read on cnn.com that MIT is offering free online courses. What's the catch, obviously that you can't get credit for them. But that makes sense, right? So pretty much my goal is to read about every class. Starting with Physics #8.952-Particle Physics of the Early Universe :) ha! yeah right. But, seriously there are some excellent courses listed for all you self-learners!

Michael Moore's new movie will be in theaters this Friday.

Having lived in Europe and being super close with my grandparents I have some pretty strong opinions regarding our health care industry. Frankly, it sucks. It's frustrating to hear about my family's experiences with doctor's visits, prescriptions and the enormous cost to stay healthy as an elderly person. It pisses me off when my friends don't have health insurance. But, what are they going to do? It's not like we're living in Europe where the government believes that one's health is a priority.

I'm so glad that Michael Moore is taking the American health care industry under the knife. While his other movies have received a lot of attention, I think many Americans feel disconnected with his ideas or agenda. Maybe they think that the topics covered in his movies aren't important. However, I think this movie will really get people talking. Who hasn't gone to an emergency room because of a painful injury? Everybody has needed to see a doctor at one point--but what happens when a doctor's visit just isn't an option? I really believe that this topic crosses the divides between communities, race, class, and political party.

According to The National Coalition on Health Care, the number of uninsured Americans rose 1.3 million between 2004 and 2005 and has increased by almost 7 million people since 2000. That's ridiculous. I've heard so many times that America needs to revise their list of priorities. Can we please start now and move improving the health care industry to the top?

I know I'm not the last person to create a profile on last.fm. I mean they only have 20 million active members! When is the rest of the planet going to wake up? What do you gotta play so that 5 billion+ folks jump out of bed and start clicking on this wicked site? lol.

I think it "works" because you can search for anything. Seriously anything. And, start a cross platform collection accessible anywhere. Plus, hear what your friends are listening to, get concert info, and see recommendations. I know this sounds ridiculous to people with "Tracks played: 8,537" - but come on. Better late than never, right? I mean, I can't see every movie, go to every show, read every magazine, launch my career, be an attentive girlfriend AND know about every groundbreaking music site? Right? ;)

Today's ARTICLE OF THE DAY appeared on wired.com. How to soundproof your apartment. I know you are probably wondering, but I don't own a drum set? What is she talking about? Trust me, sometimes you just need some soundproofing tips...

I spent a lovely weekend flying my new seahorse kite at North Beach in Clearwater. Went to Summer Jam 3 at Crowbar on Saturday and saw The Sugar Oaks with Baron Von Bear and VoxTrot at BackBooth last night. Let's just say I needed to chill with some excellent music today at work after such a busy weekend!

the state of the internet

My new job involves the Internet. I'm expected to know the latest about the online world, web trends, and how to analyze every web metric, site statistic, and internet detail. I receive more emails from mediapost.com than my boyfriend. I constantly read about web 2.0 and ponder the business decisions of google, yahoo, and apple everyday. (And, you wonder why I started a blog).

I read a super interesting article today about our online "privacy/control" or lack thereof called We're all celebrities in post-privacy age. I thought it was interesting when I read: "George W. Bush and Bill Clinton might never have been elected president had sites like Google Inc.'s YouTube or News Corp.'s MySpace, the world's biggest online meeting places, existed to record the events of their younger years." I've thought the very same thing before. Or, in another words who are we going to elect in 20 years when we can expose the AIM chats, photo galleries or blogs belonging to any presidential candidate?

I think the voting population will probably need to be much more realistic about each candidates online revelations or recorded behavior that leaked on the net (or they uploaded to their flikr site). LOL ;) The fact is that the advancement of technology and our introduction to the online realm has completely changed the way we interact with others and the way we express ourselves. It is important to be conscious of our behavior even more than ever. It's not just think before you speak (support site), it's think before you post. You might really, really want to share that awesome picture from last night's party but is it really worth risking a great job opportunity, your reputation or your safety?

What is interesting though is thinking about how much more we'll know about the great minds of tomorrow. How wonderful would it have been to study Socrates in school or to learn about Blackbeard's adventures and reading their personal blogs. So cool, I believe.

rum on the rocks

Yesterday was Father's Day and we went over to the West Coast of Florida. The best parts were swimming at Clearwater Beach and drinking rum at Island Way. We had Flor de Caña, Nicaragua's own awesome rum.

It was a good weekend.

I wrote the following today while thinking about what happened last month-May 2007. It might be a good idea to sip Flor de Caña while reading it.

Last month I realized that loss was in my future
The crystal ball showed death and tears and sadness
and blackness all around

I finally understood the definition of family
what each visit, call, kiss represents
but a bit too late in this case

I'm choking on the bitter taste of life
tears stain my memories from when i was a young girl
drinking sweet nectar in a warm home

starting the penguin march

One might think that someone professing to be a penguin princess would be completely obsessed with these adorable birds. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not. I don't wear penguin slippers, collect penguin shot glasses, or own the movie Happy Feet. But I have loved penguins since I first read The Penguin that Hated the Cold when I was a little girl. Penguins are awesome. And, right now, living in FL just 1/2 an hour from Sea World, I am a huge fan of watching the penguins swimming, jumping, sliding, racing, and standing proudly on the ice.

It's been some time since my last post on LiveJournal. Those days of commenting on life in SB and partying with the dt crew don't exist anymore. But, I hope that you enjoy reading about my time in Orlando with the emperors of the icy arctic realm.
